Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails Cries to a Dua Lipa Song
As a rock musician, Trent Reznor kept his children away from the mainstream world; however, when his six-year-old daughter sang a Dua Lipa song, he was stunned. During an interview with Rick Rubin for the ‘Tetragrammaton’ podcast, the performer discussed his emotional response to certain lyrics.
My six-year-old daughter was singing Dua Lipa the other day. It was so amazing that she was so into it. This is her music, you understand. This is her specialty. It reminded me of the skill required to compose a well-crafted composition. The other day, I cried while listening to a Dua Lipa song because it was just so well-executed, you know? It was ingenious. It felt nice. It’s challenging!”
Although he has been in the industry and producing music for Nine Inch Nails for many years, he admitted that Lipa had reminded him of the difficulty he has with composition.
“I have no idea how to do that. Because when I consider what to say or how to say it, I speak from my authentic self. And this requires me to consider who I am and my current position, and all of this together makes me feel as though the stakes are higher.”
Trent stated in the interview that he prefers film scoring, where he gives life to someone else’s vision rather than his own, and the films on which he has worked, such as ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘Gone Girl,’ and ‘The Social Network,’ are examples of this.
